I will try to get a photo of the headstone this weekend and post it here. I see from the cemetery records that it is indeed grave 844 in Section 25 / A /108.Jim Buchananhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05615039163638513296noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6939302603554293167.post-74411412920032323012011-05-19T14:20:53.379-07:002011-05-19T14:20:53.379-07:00Much clearer version of the same article.

Charles Riley), who was thought to have been amongst the killed at Antietam. There was (is?) even a headstone for him in the Antietam Nat. Cemetery (# 844 it looks like from the article, hard to make out). He was instead terribly wounded, then taken prisoner. He was subsequently exchanged, sent to Washington, and there honorably discharged for "surgical disability". Imagine his surprise when some years later while applying for a pension, he was promptly informed by the pension dept. in Washington that he had been killed at Antietam, and therefore, there was no such man as William H. Lewis of the 34th Regt. The latter part is extremely hard to read. <br /><br />"Officially Dead 5 Years": <br />http://www.fultonhistory.com/Newspaper%2011/Johnstown%20NY%20Fulton%20County%20Republican/Johnstown%20NY%20Fulton%20County%20Republican%201904-1906%20Grayscale/Johnstown%20NY%20Fulton%20County%20Republican%201904-1906%20Grayscale%20-%200186.pdf#xml=http://www.fultonhistory.com/dtSearch/dtisapi6.dll?cmd=getpdfhits&u=ffffffff939513b6&DocId=14131947&Index=Z%3a%2fFulton%20Historical&HitCount=9&hits=67+9f+13d+6a0+f0a+f0b+f0c+1004+11f0+&SearchForm=C%3a\inetpub\wwwroot\Fulton_New_form.html&.pdfMichael O'Brienhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04647359708129470237noreply@blogger.com
